Women to women: What advice would you share with others in social enterprise?

by Elvira Dias / March 2025

This International Women’s Month, we celebrate the wisdom, strength and resilience of women in social enterprise. This year’s theme, Accelerate Action, is a call to step up, own our space and drive meaningful change.

We asked women in our community to share advice with other women working within the social enterprise ecosystem. Their words are powerful reminders that we belong at the table, that self-doubt has no place in our journey and that supporting each other fuels success.

Here’s what they had to say:

Believe in yourself and take the leap

“As a co-founder of an all women-led community social enterprise, I am consistently amazed at what women bring to the table. I also constantly see too many women question themselves and their abilities more than they should. It’s nice to see the gathering of wisdom by Social Enterprise World Forum on tips, tricks and advice. There are so many bits of advice I’d give my younger self …but mainly ‘back yourself, take a big breath and just do it!’
— Paris Brooke, Wilderness Collective (Australia)

“It’s incredible what women achieve when they step into their strengths, yet self-doubt still holds so many back. The work you’re doing in leading an all-women social enterprise is truly inspiring. ‘Back yourself, take a big breath and just do it’, such simple yet profound advice that more women need to hear. Here’s to creating spaces where women not only bring their wisdom to the table but also fully own their value.”
— Christine Boucher (Australia)

“Never give up your goals for anyone, no matter what.”

Own your space and lead boldly

“Own your space, take the driver’s seat, amplify your impact and never wait for permission to lead.”
— Viviantie Sarjuni, Sabah Creative Economy and Innovation Centre (SCENIC) (Malaysia)

Own your expertise and take up space. Too often, women in social enterprise—especially in leadership—downplay their knowledge or wait for permission to step forward. Your voice, experience and vision matter. Be bold in advocating for your work, your community and the systemic change you want to see. And champion the incredible women around you.”
— Adele Laughton, Queensland Social Enterprise Council (QSEC) (Australia)

Own your seat at the table. Imposter syndrome will try to convince you that you’re not qualified enough, not experienced enough, or that someone else could do it better. Don’t let it win. You are where you are for a reason. And beyond that, use your position to lift others. As a woman in social enterprise, you have the power to bring more women and minority groups into the economy. Hire them, mentor them, invest in them. The more you create opportunities for others, the more you solidify your own place as a leader—and inspire other businesses to do the same. Be the inspiration you once needed.”
— Azima Dhanjee, ConnectHear / SEWF (Pakistan)

Stay true to your values and your journey

Your moral compass as a female entrepreneur is your best asset. When in doubt or having to make tough decisions, check in with your values and your ethics – this is where the answers lie.”
— Hélène Malandain, SEWF / People and Planet First, Aotearoa New Zealand

Follow your instincts. You do you – Bravely and Boldly. Change doesn’t happen in a day, so be kind to yourself and patient.”
— Nue Body Basics

“1. It’s okay to make mistakes – they help us learn!
2. It’s also okay to walk away from patronising opportunities that will leave you out of pocket and/or feeling undervalued.
3. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
4. You go girl.”
— Candy-Ellie Graham

Whether you’re just starting out or already steering a thriving social enterprise, let’s continue to create a world where every woman can step confidently into her power.

Carry these words with you. Believe in your vision, take bold steps and surround yourself with those who lift you higher. And most importantly—never wait for permission to lead.
