This July 2024 report captures the perspectives of over 40 grassroots and non-profit organisations on the rise of generative AI. While some express cautious optimism about AI’s ability to support their work (for example, reducing admin burden), many raise concerns about exclusion, bias, surveillance, energy use and concentration of power in Big Tech. The report advocates for civil society to play a proactive role in shaping AI governance. It calls for participatory design, tailored guidance and funding support to ensure AI development is inclusive, equitable and aligned with public interest values.
