Co-creating Hubs for Social Enterprises – Case Studies from Bulgaria

This report presents case studies of social enterprises in Bulgaria, focusing on training, product distribution, and inclusive employment. Zone 21 and The Steps offer flexible, youth-centred spaces that combine training with community use. A major challenge is the lack of a unified understanding of social entrepreneurship and limited national support networks. The report emphasises the need for shared training infrastructure, peer-led knowledge management, and collaborative governance models.

In terms of distribution, platforms such as DarPazar, The Social Market, and Ole Male help social enterprises reach broader audiences. However, challenges remain around marketing, small-scale production, and access to logistics and physical space. Many social enterprises rely on online channels and peer recommendations but need stronger strategic partnerships.

Employment-focused social enterprises like Maria’s World Foundation and The Social Teahouse support people with intellectual disabilities or from vulnerable backgrounds through job training and mentorship. Retaining staff and avoiding welfare dependency are key concerns. Across all cases, strong values, adaptable leadership, and community-based approaches are seen as essential for sustainability.
