5 innovative ways you can create positive social change in your community (with useful links)

by Kasia Kotlarska / April 2023

So, you’ve noticed a problem in your community and want to change it but don’t know how? You’re in the right place. Starting out may seem overwhelming, but trust us, you’re on the right path. As many of our SEWF Youth Forum Speakers mentioned, identifying a need and taking the first step to action is key to becoming a successful changemaker.

Creating social change can be challenging, but it doesn’t have to be. There are many innovative and effective ways to make a difference and we are here to help. Since 2008, SEWF has been supporting social enterprises across the globe to create new networks and access diverse opportunities while discovering new ideas to improve economies. With our track record over the last several years, here are some tips that will set you on the right track to creating positive social change in your community.

1. Collaborate and work together with others

A strong support network of like-minded people is vital. You don’t have to start something new right away, especially if you’re at the beginning stages of being a changemaker. You can begin your journey by joining an already-established organisation. It doesn’t even have to be the same type of change you wish to bring. Working with experienced people will let you gain transferable skills, experience and resilience to build a sustainable framework for your own social enterprise project.

“Support each other, maybe you don’t have a crazy idea that you want to work on today but there is a friend of yours or a neighbour of yours who wants to start something. If you can be a part of their journey, you can be their support system, go for it! You’ll be shocked by how much you can learn by being a part of someone else’s journey and maybe along the way you will realise that ‘hey that’s my calling as well’ … and now I have the connections and the resources to go for it.” – Azima Dhanjee, ConnectHear/SEWF (Pakistan).

Collaborative efforts can take many forms, such as joint projects, partnerships and coalitions. Here are some useful databases that will help you find and reach out to the right people and opportunities:

2. Practice and promote sustainable activities/measures

Climate change is putting a strain on our planet. Activists and social entrepreneurs are helping to bring the changes the world desperately needs. If you need inspiration, below are good examples of climate-oriented social enterprises from the 2023 SEWF Youth Forum:

  • Bamboovement – creates unique and eco-friendly personal care products as an alternative to daily used plastic items.
  • Entojutu – helps African farmers to transition to using earth friendly methods of farming.
  • Growin’ Money – plants mangrove trees to prevent soil erosion and tsunamis.

However, you don’t have to make fighting climate change your mission to have an impact. By simply reducing your environmental footprint and promoting sustainability, you can help to create a more independent and resilient community. Simple actions like using reusable bags, reducing energy consumption and conserving water can make a big difference. You can also focus on local infrastructure – produce and buy locally. This way you can not only practice sustainability but also boost the local economy.

3. Network with others and share your story

You cannot change the world alone and you cannot get supporters if no one hears your story. The best strategy is to identify conferences and seminars you could take part in as a participant or a speaker. By joining SEWF Community Hubs and attending inspiring gatherings such as SEWF25, you can connect with like-minded individuals and organisations, share your experiences and learn from others. If you’re just starting out and money is an issue, a lot of conferences offer ticket bursaries, so it’s worth checking with the organiser (early bird discounts for SEWF23 are available until 27 April so check them out!)

Contrary to popular opinion, you don’t have to be approached to be a speaker at the event. Very often you can and should apply. So, if you think you have the knowledge and experience, put yourself forward! Networking can help you to build relationships, gain new insights and find new opportunities to create positive change.

4. Be part of grassroots activism and advocacy

Grassroots activism and advocacy are essential in creating any positive social change. Local people have the best knowledge of their own local context, challenges and systems. Following the “nothing about us without us” principle, locals can lead initiatives and make meaningful changes. This can take many forms, such as organizing protests, letter-writing campaigns, and lobbying efforts. An example of a successful grassroots organisation is Durian Nigeria.

5. Join creative arts and culture initiatives

Art has a significant role in our society. Sadly, in our busy lives, we often forget about it. Art can also be very therapeutic for individuals and entire communities, providing a space to be creative, open and to have fun. By using art and culture as a tool for communication and engagement, you can raise awareness about important social issues and inspire change. This can take many forms, such as art exhibitions, theatre performances and music festivals.
